Rae Howell is a freelance ‘musician, composer, pianist and vibraphonist extraordinaire‘. Her work is shaped by her diverse skills and interests, as composer; performer; orchestrator; producer; impresario; arts consultant; music stylist; theorist; teacher and entrepreneur. Similarly, her music oscillates effortlessly across genres, far-reaching listeners across the globe through a vast range of projects.

In addition to solo pursuits in writing and performing, Rae is the founding and artistic director of Sunwrae (a label, ensemble and sheet music publisher in Australia), and works in collaboration with performing and visual artists in theatre, film, dance, multimedia and concert hall projects. Her list of works is flourishing, from solo to orchestral pieces, sound design for installations, film and theatre soundtracks and special event commissions.

Rae’s music has been broadcast on BBC Radio, WNYC, ABC Classic FM, ABC Radio National and a myriad of regional and community radio stations across the globe. Performing ‘little symphonies for the contemporary population’, Rae’s compositions are a rare treat, crossing the boundaries of classical, jazz, popular and cinematic styles with immediacy and vibrancy rarely experienced in contemporary music today.

Graduating from The University of Melbourne Conservatorium in Australia (BMus) and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London (MMus), Rae’s fellowships include Musician/Composer in Residence posts at The Banff Centre in Canada; Yaddo in New York and the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida USA; the ARENA International Theatre Festival in Erlangen, Germany; Instituto Sacatar in Bahia, Brazil (UNESCO Aschberg Bursary); The Visby International Centre for Composers in Sweden; Ho Chi Minh City Opera House Vietnam, ECCO International in The Gambia West Africa; La Sonora in Argentina; and The Edward Said National Conservatoire of Music in Palestine. During these residencies, Rae has worked alongside and in collaboration with some of world’s most prolific artists. Currently she works with sonic & visual artist Jon Cohrs (NY, USA) on an electronic music project ‘Rabbitsss’, and NY composer Bradford Reed.

Rae’s album releases include Never Stops to Wait (2005), several Live Eavesdropping CDs & DVDs (2003-2007), Autumn Never Fall (2009), Live at The Thornbury Theatre (2010), Heavy Forest Air (2013), Penguins (by Rabbitsss, 2014), Invisible Wilderness (double volume solo record and piano music anthology, 2015), and Captain Matchbox (2016).

She has appeared live at leading arts festivals internationally and is also the founder of the touring concert series ‘Eavesdropping’, showcasing new music and visual arts. Recently Rae performed live for Sir David Attenborough and the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip for the official launch of BBC One’s Documentary Series on the Great Barrier Reef.
